The inscription in this presentation copy was written by Winifred Fortescue. She wrote this book while living in a cottage in England called 'Many Waters', after her escape from France during the war. The book was presented to her 'landlady', Jenny, at the Stonehurst Estate, Sussex, where the cottage was located.

The inscription reads as follows:

'With my love to Jenny.
An advance copy of my new book.
(a very meagre war-edition, getting thinner + thinner!)
In it she will recognise a description of Stonehurst in winter, - search the Prologue!'
