  • Douglas Dashwood-Howard has very kindly provided an illustrated family tree for the Beech side of Winifred's family. I am, once again, extremely grateful to Douglas and all Winifred's relatives who have agreed to it being displayed on the web site family history page. To see it now, click here.


  • The Webmaster is doing a bit of research! There may be a few snaps later this week! Update 1 - So far I have done quite a lot of tidying up of various pages, re-vamping and adding bits of information here and there. There are some nice additional pictures on the Cannes page. Update 2 - new pictures added to the Grasse - Cannes Rly page, the Chemin de Fer Provence page and the Chapel Victoria page including some 'before and after shots' around Grasse.

  • A brand new page with a splendid photograph, (at last), of Winifred's birth place, The Old Rectory at Great Bealings, Suffolk. Until recently this had been the home of the late Lord Belstead. Click here to visit now.

  • Brian Sanders, the artist for the 1990's Black Swan books, has very kindly supplied his proof versions of the covers. They are of course flat and make it much easier to see the complete cover picture. Click here to view.


  • 2 lovely photographs of Winifred, probably in her early twenties and still acting, have recently been found re-produced as postcards. I am extremely grateful to Douglas Dashwood-Howard for securing the purchase of these cards and allowing inclusion on the site. Click on the thumbnails below to see the full size images.

  • The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains an entry for both John & Winifred Fortescue. I am pleased to report that they are now going to consider an entry for Fr.Adrian Fortescue, a cousin of John's who is not listed at present. To read more about this amazing man click here. The online edition of the Oxford DNB contains detailed information on over 55000 lives. Previously only available via a hefty subscription or an institution, it is now available to  virtually everyone with a library ticket. If your local authority library has subscribed to the Oxford DNB, and most have, you can access it on line with your local library card number. Click here to visit the Oxford DNB then click on the Subscribers Enter Here button, enter you library card number in the appropriate box. (Access is also available from outside the UK).

  • A very exciting new publication with biographies on Winifred Fortescue, Elisabeth Starr and their neighbours on the hill in Opio is nearing completion. This is the culmination of 6 years research and writing by Maureen Emerson and will be of immense interest to Fortescue fans. More information is available in the visitors book.

  • 'TESCO RACE FOR LIFE' On Sunday14th May Fiona & Vicki Riley and Allison Awre completed the 5km event at Stratford-upon-Avon Race Course, Warwickshire. The 'going' was soft, as they say in racing terms, due to the recent monsoon like rains! Between the three of them they raised the fantastic figure of £1386 for Cancer Research UK. Thanks to everyone who sponsored the event.

  • 'Spammers' have recently been corrupting the visitors book so all entries are now received at the site first and then added to the book as soon as possible. Keep up the entries!


  • Some interesting books available at present, click here to see the book list page. Coming later this month a new gallery for photo's from the area in general. If you have a good photo you would like displayed email it for consideration.

  • The webmaster's wife and daughter are taking part in the 'Race for Life' 2006 to raise money for cancer research. The race is on May 14th at Stratford-upon-Avon racecourse, Warwickshire. If you would like to sponsor them and help this really worthy cause you can do so on line. Every penny helps! Thanks.
